Description:
Historically, endodontic surgery had a negative image in the dental profession because of its invasive nature and questionable outcome.
Unsuitable surgical instruments, inadequate vision, frequent postoperative complications and failures often resulted in tooth extraction. Moreover, academic endodontic surgical training used to be limited in undergraduate and postgraduate programs around the world. The truth is that surgical endodontics was considered as a last resort procedure, with poor prognosis and limited importance for endodontic education.
Recently, surgical endodontics evolved to microsurgical endodontics. Powerful dental operation microscopes, miniaturized instruments, ultrasonics and more biocompatible filling materials have been introduced and incorporated in modern surgical endodontic practice. These technical advances have rendered microsurgery a more predictable approach and an indispensible tool for the identification and management of root canal treatment failure, especially when non surgical approaches are considered of little value or impractical.
Microsurgical identification and management of Endodontic Treatment failure is a lecture that seeks to investigate the etiology of root canal treatment failure by microscopic inspection during surgery. The objective is to understand the etiology of initial treatment failure and appreciate the biologic principles of endodontics.
